I will rarely write about my natural hair. I have been natural for 5 years now; trading my straight tresses for protective styles. My favorite being Faux Locs. Over the years I have toyed with locing my hair officially. I love the style and I love the way it makes me feel. I barely saw my natural hair for years. Couldn’t remember the length of how it felt between my fingers. I would simply remove the style for quick maintenance and reinstall. The style that I loved so much began to take a toll on my hair. I developed Tension Alopecia. Tension or Traction Alopecia is associated with sustained tension on the scalp hair resulting in localized hair loss. I became embarrassed and ashamed. My confidence began to decline drastically and I hit beneath hats, wigs, and fancy scarves.
I sought professional assistance from my dermatologist. I wanted my hair to be healthy and strong. Instead of putting constant pressure on my hair, I decided to show it some love. Appreciating my curls in its current state. Finding hairstyles that would mask the hair loss. I ran my fingers through my hair for the first time a few weeks ago. It was dry, brittle, uneven and limp. Moisture was non-existent and that was where I needed to start. I got a small box in the mail a week later from the NaturAll Club. The NaturAll Club produces Fresh Avacado Deep Conditioners and I was very fortunate to receive their deep conditioning kit.
THE PROCESS
One chilly Sunday afternoon I stood in front of the mirror and looked at the destruction which was my hair. The kit included was packed with an Avacado Deep Conditioner specifically for dry hair. Along with a hair tie, spray bottle, shower cap, leave in serum and detailed instructions. I lightly misted my hair with room temperature water. Parted my hair into four sections; applying the conditioner to the back of my head first; concentrating on the damaged areas. The conditioner smelled great, was chilled and very creamy. It was a welcomed sensation. I covered my hair with the provided cap for about 45 minutes. During that time there was no stinging, itching or an unpleasant sensation. After the allotted time I removed the cap. The definition in my curls was amazing. My hair felt moisturized and I was astonished how healthy it felt and appeared.
For the first time in a long time, I appreciated my curls. I forgot about my condition. I just enjoyed being….me.
Until Next Time…
